Qualitative Data Collection

. Key Informant Interviews

12-15 local food system experts will be interviewed
(including traditional food harvesters, social workers, policymakers, store managers, and school/daycare administrators and teachers).

02. Focus Groups

Focus groups will be conducted with children and youth aged 6-19 years old who volunteer to participate. The children/youth will be asked about their perspectives about the foods available in their community through participatory drawing activities.
• 12 participants aged 6-11 years old will participate in one focus group
• 12 participants aged 12-19 years old will participate in one focus group

Quantitative Data Collection

QUESTIONNAIRE AND URINE SAMPLE

  • 100 children/youth aged 3-19 years old
  • Social, demographic and dietary questionnaire, including a “24hr recall” of all foods and beverages consumed by the participating child/youth on the day prior to the interview
  • Urine sample from participating child/youth

HOUSEHOLD INSPECTION AND AIR QUALITY MEASUREMENTS

  • 100 parents/caregivers of participating children/youth will answer questions about the home
  • Household inspection using standardized tool
  • Dust collection
  • Installation of air quality monitors
  • Installation of radon detectors
  • Collection of air quality monitors
  • Short follow-up air quality questionnaire
  • 20 randomly selected participating children/youth will be asked for a second 24-hour recall
  • 100 participating children/youth aged 3-19 years old
  • Height, weight, waist circumference and body composition measurements
  • Hair, blood and urine sample collection
  • Blood pressure and lung function
  • Health and lifestyle questionnaire, with some questions directed to the parent/caregiver and others to youth aged 12 and over
  • Mental health and substance use questionnaire
